Was a stray dog the first to cross Romania-Hungary border after Schengen expansion?

A video showed police officers clapping in honor of the border-crossing dog's Schenanigans.

Since the start of 2025, a video circulated online purportedly showing a stray dog being the first to cross the newly re-opened Hungary-Romania border after Romania became a full Schengen member on the first day of that year. Europe's Schengen area consists of a group of countries that benefit from easier travel between fellow member nations.

The footage appeared on social media platforms such as Reddit (archived) and TikTok (archived) where it received widespread engagement. One X post featuring the video (archived) was captioned: "A stray dog accidentally becomes the first to cross the border between Romania and Hungary after Romania became a full member of the European Union," while the Reddit post added that it was "after Romania became a full member of the European Union's Schengen area."

Multiple news outlets, including Yahoo! News and Australia's SBS News, also reported on the video in early January 2025.

The owner of the video, the manager of a Facebook page named Plastilina Foto, confirmed via Messenger that the clip was real and was not the product of artificial intelligence. There were also no signs that the footage was AI-generated. However, it was not possible to independently confirm that the dog was the very first to cross the Hungary-Romania border after the latter became a full Schengen member, nor was it possible to independently verify that the dog was a stray.

There were reportedly at least 12 road crossings between the two countries in January 2025 and Snopes could not rule out the possibility of another person or creature crossing one of those points before the dog did. As such, we have not applied a rating to the claim.

What is the Schengen area?

According to the official Council of the European Union website, the Schengen area is the "largest free travel area in the world," named after a village in Luxembourg "where the Schengen Agreement and the Schengen Convention were signed in 1985 and in 1990 respectively."

Citizens of countries in the Schengen area are able to travel to other member countries without going through border control. As of this writing, all members of the European Union, except Ireland and Cyprus, and all members of the European Free Trade Association are part of the Schengen area, with Romania and Bulgaria joining in January 2025

Source of the video

The manager of the Plastilina Foto Facebook page posted the footage (archived) on Jan. 1, 2025, hours after the border reopening. The fireworks audible off-camera helped authenticate that it was captured on New Year's. He confirmed via Messenger that it was authentic and that he recorded the video "the night when Romania entered the Schengen area." He explained that the dog crossed from Hungary into Romania, which matched up with when the flags visible in the video appeared.

A nonprofit charity called Save The Dogs and Other Animals published an article in late January claiming that the incident occurred at the Vama Patea border crossing. Details visible in publicly available images of the crossing on Google Street View matched with details in Plastilina Foto's video, as shown below, where the positioning and color of buildings, a sign and a window all corresponded. Therefore it was possible to confirm that this is where the footage was recorded.

Snopes contacted spokespeople from the Hungarian and Romanian police forces to ask whether the alleged stray dog was the first to cross the Hungary-Romania border when it reopened Jan. 1. We will update this story if we receive a response.

ATV Hungary, a privately owned news channel, broadcast a follow-up on the dog. The reporters named him Schengen after his border-crossing shenanigans. According to the segment, a former border guard adopted Schengen and he now lives on a farm with other dogs.

For more on dogs in strange scenarios, Snopes investigated the claim that a dog received a medal for defusing a bomb by urinating on it.
