Canadian Woman Was Detained for Not Taking Tuberculosis Medication — But There's More to It

Many claims spread online ahead of federal elections on April 28, 2025, including rumors about Canadian PM Mark Carney.

On April 28, 2025, Canadians will vote in federal elections. At the time of this writing, Reuters reported that the Liberal party, led by current Prime Minister Mark Carney, were leading in the polls ahead of the Conservative party.

Carney has been at the center of several rumors we've fact-checked. Some such claims included whether he's related to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau through marriage (false), if the prime minister plagiarized his economics thesis (difficult to say) and whether he once wrote, "Western society is morally rotten and has been corrupted by capitalism" (false).

As tariffs have become a major focus of U.S. President Donald Trump's second term, we've also fact-checked rumors involving both them and Canada. Carney himself was also caught up in at least one of these rumors: We previously fact-checked whether the prime minister orchestrated a massive sale of U.S. bonds to force Trump to back down on tariffs.
