The U.S. formally established the CIA in 1947, when former President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act amid increasing tensions with the Soviet Union.
Since its creation, the CIA has developed a reputation for cloak and dagger espionage due to its often covert missions and plethora of classified information. In turn, numerous conspiracy theories about CIA have surfaced, covering everything from its alleged involvement in Bob Marley's death to the AIDS crisis.
In light of the United States' capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January 2025 — which renewed discussions about the CIA's involvement in Latin American affairs — we've compiled a sampling of rumors involving the agency that Snopes has investigated over the years.
