On March 13, 2020, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the COVID-19 pandemic was a national emergency. Since then, the virus has killed over 1 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A February 2025 update to a Gallup poll originally published in March 2020 found 11% of respondents reported long COVID symptoms for three months or longer.

On the fifth anniversary of the emergency declaration we're taking a look back at rumors we've fact-checked that involve COVID-19. Some of the topics we've fact-checked include rumors that four COVID-19 vaccine trial patients developed Bell's Palsy (mostly true), whether the FDA "admitted" doctors can prescribe Ivermectin for COVID-19 in 2023 (false), and if animated TV series "The Simpsons" predicted the initial outbreak (also false).
