The catastrophic wildfires devastating parts of Australia have taken a huge toll on animals as well as people. By some estimates, as many as a billion animals have perished because of the fires.

Given that heartbreaking statistic, it’s small wonder that a story about an instance of nonhuman kindness has gone viral in recent weeks. According to a popular meme, Australian wombats have been rescuing other animals by shepherding them into the safety of their large underground burrows.
