A number of Snopes readers have asked about the veracity of reports that a Christian private school in Kentucky expelled a teenage student after a photo went viral showing the adolescent wearing a rainbow-patterned sweater and sitting in front of a rainbow-frosted birthday cake. Rainbows are often displayed as a symbol of LGBTQ pride and solidarity.

So was the student really expelled from school, as the New York Daily News put it, for “lifestyle violations” signified by a rainbow sweater? Snopes.com’s Dan MacGuill investigated.
