On Jan. 23, the Trump administration announced “The Navigable Waters Protection Rule,” a redefinition of “waters of the United States” for regulatory purposes that critics allege will essentially “gut” established clean water protections.

The administration says the change provides needed “clarity, predictability, and consistency.” However, experts told Snopes reporters Bethania Palma and Alex Kasprak that while the safety of America’s drinking water won’t be affected, the new rule will make maintaining water quality standards more difficult and expensive, and the cost will be passed along to consumers.
