Americans had mixed reactions to U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s tearing up a printed copy of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address after the speech on Tuesday. Opinions were split mostly along partisan lines, with Republicans condemning the act as disrespectful and/or unethical, and some even calling for Pelosi’s prosecution.
The latter group cited a federal law forbidding the destruction of government records. There is such a law, though it’s quite specific about which kinds of documents are protected and which are not.
