After news reports broke that Russia seeks to involve itself in the presidential campaign of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, critics of the Democratic candidate seized on the opportunity to suggest he has longtime, suspect ties to that country and even “honeymooned” there at the "height of the Cold War.”

Snopes.com’s Dan Evon dug into contemporaneous media coverage and learned that Sanders and his wife did embark on a journey to the Soviet Union shortly after they were married in 1988, but it was hardly a trip most people would describe as a “honeymoon.”
