On this date in 1941, the Japanese air force attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, triggering America’s entry into World War II.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt said the date of the attack would “live in infamy” — and so it does, along with many rumors and misconceptions about the event, including some of quite recent origin.
