Anti-ICE protester wearing Army fatigues in video isn't active duty

Since U.S. President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025, his administration has intensified immigration enforcement efforts, deploying thousands of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to cities nationwide. 

Immigration raids, arrests, and confrontations between residents and agents have sparked protests and drawn increased scrutiny of ICE from Minneapolis to Los Angeles. Tensions spiked in Minneapolis after an ICE agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good on Jan. 7, 2026. Federal authorities said the agent shot Good in an act of self-defense after she attempted to run him over with her vehicle, but media analyses of bystanders' cellphone footage and Democratic politicians have challenged the veracity of that account.

Residents have increasingly filmed and photographed law enforcement activity in their cities, fueling a flood of social media claims related to ICE and its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Some of the imagery captured real events, such as a DHS officer defacing a memorial for Renee Good, while other footage was fake or framed inaccurately, like a miscaptioned video claiming to show New York City residents pelting ICE agents with snowballs.
