As a young naval officer in the 1950s, Jimmy Carter helped contain a potentially dangerous accident at a nuclear reactor in Canada.
Flash forward almost three decades and he was the first president to have solar panels installed on the roof of the White House.
Below are more facts about Carter's life in light of his death at age 100 on Dec. 29, 2024.
A Democrat who served one presidential term that ended in 1981, Carter spent his later years continuing political advocacy , volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and teaching Sunday school at a Georgia church.
