In the spring of 2025, Mark Carney won the general election in Canada for the Liberal Party. This victory came after a reversal in popularity trends between Canada's Conservative Party and Liberal Party. Conservatives dominated the polls until Jan. 20, 2025, when U.S. President Donald Trump took office for the second time.
From that moment, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilièvre, deemed by critics a "Trump Light" character, tumbled out of favor. This trend (archived) only intensified when Carney, until then chair of the economic task force assembled to advise then-Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on economic growth, was appointed Liberal Party leader and prime minister after Trudeau's resignation in March 2025.
A Harvard- and Oxford University-trained economist, Carney came from a career as a central banker. From 2008 to 2013, he was the governor of the Bank of Canada, helping to steady the country's economy in a context of financial and economic crisis. He then became the governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.
Here are seven rumors Snopes examined from the moment he was named Liberal Party leader and prime minister in March 2025.
