Mitch McConnell, who first assumed office as a Republican U.S. senator for the state of Kentucky in 1985, eventually became the longest-serving Republican Senate majority leader in history. 

Throughout his tenure, McConnell has been the subject of numerous rumors about his health. In the summer of 2026, Snopes investigated claims that the senator was dead or on life support following reports of his hospitalization.
