In the United States, Pride Month marks the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall uprising, which began when the patrons of a gay bar in New York City — many who were trans women of color and drag queens — resisted a police raid, sparking a six-day rebellion. 

While the resistance at Stonewall Inn did not represent the first time American LGBTQ+ people fought back against oppression, the riots inspired protests across the United States and around the world. Thirty years after Stonewall, President Bill Clinton signed a proclamation officially designating June as "Gay and Lesbian Pride Month."
