Spurring a flurry of news headlines in the U.S. over the years, President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to acquire Greenland, floating the possibility of a military takeover .
Greenland is an autonomous territory of the kingdom of Denmark. The U.S. recognized Denmark's control of the island in 1917 in exchange for Denmark allowing the U.S. to buy the islands now known as the Virgin Islands. Greenland is a resource-rich , strategically placed part of the globe, which explains the Trump's interest in it.
