Financier Jeffrey Epstein's arrest in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges and subsequent suicide while in custody kicked off a flurry of rumors about which notable names may have been involved in Epstein's schemes.
Epstein was a noted socialite with powerful people in his rolodex and as such, alleged associations with everyone from U.S. President Donald Trump to superstar performer Taylor Swift have made their way across the internet.
In June 2025, Elon Musk, the billionaire former ally to Donald Trump and figurehead of Trump's cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), posted on X that Trump was named in Epstein's files, which once again started the rumor mill churning. Musk and Trump appeared to have had a significant falling out, prompting Musk to make the statement.
Epstein was first arrested in 2006 following a grand jury indictment for soliciting prostitution, which resulted in Epstein pleading guilty to "one count of solicitating [sic] prostitution and one count of soliciting prostitution from someone under the age of 18," according to The Associated Press. Epstein served a majority of his 18-month sentence on a work-release program and was added to the sex offender registry before being released in July 2009.
Epstein was arrested again 10 years later on July 6, 2019, this time on federal sex trafficking charges, and found dead in his cell just over a month later on Aug. 10, 2019.
Rumors of his alleged associations with prominent politicians like Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris have been widely circulated for years, along with more bizarre claims like the kids television network Nickelodeon redesigning its logo in the shape of Epstein's private island or rumors he owned a piece of artwork depicting former U.S. President George W. Bush playing with paper airplanes.
Here's a collection of 20 rumors running the gamut that Snopes has investigated since 2024.
