In April 2026, people on social media began sharing a rumor that eligible men in the United States would be automatically registered for the military draft before the end of the year. One X post (archived) from April 8 read, "JUST IN: Eligible males aged 18-25 will be automatically registered for US military draft starting December, 2026."
The claim also grabbed attention on other social media platforms (archived), such as Facebook (archived) and Reddit (archived). Snopes readers searched the site and emailed us asking whether the rumor was true.
As of this writing, the U.S. Selective Service System, the federal agency that manages the draft and its registration, is in the process of changing its process so that eligible men are automatically registered for the draft. Therefore, we've rated this claim true.
Though all men between the ages of 18 and 25 must still be registered in case it's reinstated, the U.S. military draft has been inactive since 1973, when the nation switched to an all-volunteer force.
In December 2025, Congress passed and President Donald Trump signed into law the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. A section of that law directed the SSS to make changes to the registration system so it would be automatic. The law said it would go into effect one year after the date of the law's enactment, which was Dec. 18.
Before the mandated change, U.S. law required that all men 18 to 25 register for the draft through the SSS with a valid Social Security number, according to the Selective Service System's FAQ page. If an eligible man failed to register for the draft himself, he could be subject to penalties up to five years of imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.
On March 30, 2026, the SSS proposed a rule to the U.S. General Services Administration to change its draft registration process to automatic registration.
Proposing a rule is just one step in the federal rulemaking process that can take months or longer for federal agencies. The SSS says it "will implement the change by December 2026" and use "federal data sources" to automatically register people.
