About this rating

A rumor that circulated on social media in August 2025 claimed country music star Blake Shelton walked off the set of ABC's "Good Morning America" after an "on-air clash" with anchor George Stephanopoulos.

Facebook posts (archived here and here) sharing the rumor read:

Blake Shelton stunned viewers on Good Morning America when he abruptly walked off the set after a tense, on-air clash with George Stephanopoulos—and the moment is now exploding across social media. What began as a friendly interview turned sour fast, as pointed questions and sharp words flew between the country star and the veteran host. The tension was so thick you could almost feel it through the screen. Then, without warning, Shelton pushed back his chair, stood up, and walked away, leaving cameras rolling and the audience in shock. Gasps filled the studio, Twitter lit up within seconds, and fans are still debating what pushed the singer to his breaking point. It wasn't just a walk-off—it was a live TV mic drop

Some posts included links in comments to advertisement-filled stories about the alleged confrontation between Shelton and Stephanopoulos, as well as images supposedly showing the fight.

Snopes readers also searched our website for confirmation of whether the rumor was true.

However, the story about Shelton walking off the set of "Good Morning America" was fictional.

Searches of Bing, DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo found no news media outlets reporting on the story. If the rumor was true, prominent news outlets likely would have reported on it.

While it's unclear who authored the story, it's part of a trend of sensational — but false — stories about celebrities on social media. The story was seemingly written to generate advertising revenue for websites linked in the aforementioned Facebook posts.

An examination of posts with the story about Shelton indicated that the photos and text were likely created with the help of artificial-intelligence (AI) software.

For example, the AI-detection platform Sightengine estimated a 99% probability that the images were deepfakes, or photos that were generated or edited using AI. GPTZero, another AI-detection tool, also reported that it was "highly confident" that AI helped create the Facebook posts' text.

A similar version of the rumor about Shelton also appeared on YouTube. On July 22, 2025, the YouTube channel Talk Show Intel posted a video (archived) titled "Blake Shelton Kicked Off Good Morning America After Heated Clash With George Stephanopoulos." The video had garnered more than 20,000 views as of this writing.

However, unlike the Facebook posts, the video included a disclaimer in its description: "The stories presented on this channel are entirely fictional and crafted solely for entertainment."

Snopes has previously debunked other rumors about celebrities supposedly "walking off" production sets of TV shows. For example, we reported on false stories about actors Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise walking off "The View" after confrontations with host Joy Behar.
