Claims that retired National Football League quarterback Peyton Manning accompanied a teenage cancer patient to her high school prom circulated online in May 2025, along with a variety of alleged images of the event.
One image shared by users on Facebook (archived, archived) featured Manning in a tuxedo dancing with a young girl wearing a dress and head covering.
This version of the claim said:
The boy she was supposed to go with stopped answering her texts. And by the week of prom, Sophie had made up her mind. "I'll still go," she told her mom. "Just for one hour. Even if I have to sit by myself." What no one knew was that Sophie had written a letter three months earlier. It was short. She never expected a reply. She mailed it to Peyton Manning.
A different image circulated on Facebook (archived) as well, this one featuring Manning in a tux walking down a hospital hallway with a young girl wearing a dress and tiara as hospital staff cheer them on.
This rendition of the claim stated:
Later that night, she cried into her pillow and whispered: "I just wanted one night to feel normal." The nurse heard her. So did someone else. The next evening, the lights dimmed in the hallway. A disco ball spun from a curtain rod. And music began to play. Her door opened — and in walked Peyton Manning in a tuxedo, holding a single rose.
Despite social media users expressing joy over the feel-good nature of these claims, the rumor that Manning accompanied a teenage cancer patient to her prom is false. The images accompanying the tall tale were created using generative artificial intelligence.
Snopes ran both images shared in the claims through the AI detection tool Hive Moderation, which found above a 99% chance that each was generated with AI.

Keen-eyed readers will notice in the image of Manning and the alleged teenager walking past hospital staff that the text appearing on signs in the background is made of gibberish, an easy indicator of the image's creation through AI.
Further, one claim suggested that the girl in question was named Sophie and another purported her name was Jasmine, the former attending prom in a hotel ballroom and the latter forced to enjoy prom at the hospital. The accompanying stories in both claims are similar in tone and structure.

Finally, no credible outlets reported this claim despite Manning's well-known advocacy for cancer research. For example, Manning made headlines in 2015 when he flew a fan battling Stage 4 cancer to the Denver Broncos' opening game of the NFL season.
Additionally, the retired football star appeared in fundraising videos for the V Foundation for Cancer Research, was interviewed by a teenage cancer survivor and was thanked by a cancer survivor for saving their life.
In 2007, a donation for an undisclosed amount to St. Vincent Children's Hospital in Indiana, where Manning spent the bulk of his NFL career, resulted in it being renamed Peyton Manning's Children's Hospital. The hospital's website states it delivers "advanced care for children with cancer and blood disorders."
In reports about the name change, St. Vincent Health CEO Vincent C. Caponi said, "He is not only an extraordinary football athlete, but also a role model who is committed to giving back to children and the community."
While the particular story of Manning accompanying a teen to prom is false, it was likely able to deceive so many people because of Manning's previous history in cancer advocacy.
Snopes has fact-checked other claims about Manning, including rumors that he comforted a crying boy at a gala, bought a minivan for a needy mom and calmed an upset baby on a flight.
