About this rating

Vintage advertisements often resurface online. Some are authentic throwbacks, while others are entirely fabricated. One such ad, which some social media users claimed was from 1969, allegedly promoted a two-headed body shaver with the tagline: "Give your wife an extra head for Christmas."

One Reddit post (archived) with the alleged razor ad said it came "from December 12th 1969 life magazine." Some users pointed out the apparent double entendre in the promo, which was sponsored by the former Remington brand, with one asking, "That Remington ad… did they know?"

The purported ad also appeared on other social media platforms such as X and Facebook. A printed version of it was listed for sale on eBay, as well.

In short, the advertisement did appear in a 1969 issue of Life magazine. Therefore, we have rated this claim as true.

Real Vintage Christmas Ad

As claimed in the Reddit post, the in-question ad appeared in the Dec. 12, 1969, issue of Life magazine, as archived on Google Books (page 33).

The advertisement's text read: "If you take a good look at the ladies' shaver above you will notice something no other ladies' shaver has. An extra shaving head. We put it there because a lady has shaving problems you, as a man, never dreamed of."

It continued:

First there are her legs. Beautiful, perhaps. But tough. So they need a shaver that's every bit as rugged as a man's. On the other hand, there are her underarms. Delicate. Sensitive. Obviously in need of a completely different shaver. Until now no shaver could do both jobs well. Because no single shaving head could be that tough and that gentle at the same time. Which brings us to our shaver with the extra head.

It's called the Lady Remington and it's the world's first two-headed shaver. It has a tough head for legs. And a gentle one for underarms. All for the price of most one-headed shavers. The two-headed Lady Remington. An idea so simple we're embarrassed we didn't think of it before.

We have investigated similar vintage Christmas ads in the past. For example, we looked at a 1947 advertisement for Arrow Shirts that depicts Santa Claus contemplating shooting himself, as well as a fake vintage KFC ad that reads: "The Colonel's holiday three-way: twice the breasts, thighs and legs."
