Another X post (archived) that relayed the claim and called Trump's keeping the original trophy "pathetic" had amassed 867,500 views as of this writing, and 14,000 likes. The claim further spread on X, but also on Reddit and TikTok. Further, Snopes readers searched the website seeking to verify the veracity of the claim.
In addition, several news reports made the same claim, including The Guardian and The Independent, both U.K.-based news outlets.
The rumor stemmed from comments Trump made in a video interview with the British sports streaming platform DAZN. Because the president himself gave this information, we were able to determine he had indeed said he'd kept the original trophy.
DAZN published a clip of the interview on YouTube on July 14, 2025, the day after the tournament's final. However, it was clear from the exchange that it had been recorded as the final was taking place on July 13, 2025:
During the interview, the reporter said the trophy was now at Trump Tower. Trump responded, saying FIFA had gifted him the trophy:
They said, "Could you hold this trophy for a little while?" We put it in the Oval Office and then I said, "When are you going to pick up the trophy?" He said, "We're never going to pick it up. You can have it forever in the Oval Office. We're making a new one." And they actually made a new one. So that was quite exciting.
Trump did not confirm whether he had moved the trophy to Trump Tower. We have contacted the White House to inquire about the current whereabouts of the trophy and what plans, if any, Trump has for it. We have also contacted FIFA asking whether they had indeed gifted the trophy to Trump. We will update this report should they respond.
