In mid-May 2026, a rumor spread that a Florida woman was arrested after attempting to ride a shopping cart down an interstate highway at 3 a.m. using a sail fashioned from a shower curtain.
On Facebook, Instagram and X, social media users posted an image purportedly showing the woman's mug shot alongside the caption, "FLORIDA WOMAN DETAINED AFTER ATTEMPTING TO RIDE A SHOPPING CART DOWN I-95 AT 3 AM WITH A SAIL FASHIONED FROM A SHOWER CURTAIN." According to the posts, the woman's name was Jessica Marino.
Many commenters seemed to interpret the rumor as being true. Snopes readers contacted us to investigate its legitimacy.
The spread of this claim follows the convention of numerous fake satirical stories online about strange arrests, complete with a mug shot generated by artificial intelligence. The image appeared to originate from The Dude Humor Report, a social media page with more than 100,000 Instagram followers that "features satire & parody stories that are exaggerated."
As such, we have rated this claim as one that originated as satire.
While searches of The Dude Humor Report's Instagram page did not reveal the original post, a reverse image search of the picture led to numerous Facebook posts that shared a since-deleted post. Search results, which sometimes show information that is no longer available on a webpage, indicated that The Dude Humor Report may have posted the satirical story and image on Facebook.
As of this writing, The Dude Humor Report Facebook page is not available. However, its Instagram page (archived) of The Dude Humor Report features similar satirical stories and images. We reached out to The Dude Humor Report on Instagram to ask if it did, in fact, create the story about the supposed Florida woman.
The earliest live example of this particular post (screenshot) found using a reverse image search was a May 12 post on a Facebook page called "Floridiana Humor," which captioned the image with "#satire."
In a direct message on Facebook, the Floridiana Humor account said it did not create the image.
If the story was real, news outlets likely would have covered it. Searches for "Jessica Marino Florida arrest" on Google, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo returned no relevant results from reputable publications.
The post also included a "FOX LOCAL" logo in the top lefthand corner. Fox Local, which shows "24/7 streaming coverage across the nation," has one station based in Florida: WTVT in Tampa Bay.
A search for the name "Jessica Marino" using WTVT's search function found no relevant results. (For what it's worth, Interstate 95, which runs along the eastern side of Florida, does not go through Tampa Bay.)
Tools used to detect AI use, including Hive Moderation and ZeroGPT, determined the fake Marino's mug shot had a high likelihood of being generated using artificial intelligence. (These tools are fallible. Snopes cautions against using AI detection tools as definitive evidence of AI generation without supporting evidence.)
Snopes has written about similar "Florida man" style stories before. For example we debunked a satirical story about a Florida man who was supposedly arrested after attempting to "baptize" an alligator in a Waffle House.
Because the effectiveness of satire is subjective, we use "originated as satire" or "labeled satire" ratings based on creators' description of their work. It's your call on whether you agree.
