In May 2025, online users shared and discussed a rumor claiming U.S. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries received a $1.2 million luxury apartment as a gift from the Mexican government.
For example, users copied and pasted the same text about the New York representative on Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived), Threads (archived), Truth Social (archived) and X (archived).

The posts featured a misspelling of Jeffries' first name, and read as follows:
Hakim Jeffries doesn't want to discuss the $1.2 million luxury apartment the Mexican government GIFTED to him in 2022.
The 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 3,100 square foot penthouse in Cabo was given to him "in gratitude for all he's done for the people of Mexico.
He's not giving it back or handing it over to the government when he leaves office. He's just keeping it.
However, this rumor was not true. A manager of the America's Last Line of Defense Facebook page made up this fictional story for a post (archived) on May 15. ALLOD, a network of Facebook pages and websites, describes its output as satirical in nature.

The bio for the Facebook page read, "The flagship of the ALLOD network of trollery and propaganda for cash. Nothing on this page is real." The image of Jeffries included with many of the claim's reposts displayed an "S" for "satire" label in its lower-left corner.
Snopes contacted Jeffries' office by phone to ask if they wished to share a statement commenting on the rumor.
The fictional story spread in the days after President Donald Trump posted (archived) on his Truth Social account that the nation of Qatar offered the Department of Defense a "gift" of a $400 million luxury Boeing 747-8 to be remodeled into a new, and allegedly temporary, Air Force One.
Snopes has addressed similar satirical claims in May 2025, including the assertion that President Bill Clinton received a $17 million helicopter from Saudi Arabia and a rumor that his vice president, Al Gore, accepted a $90 million custom Gulfstream jet from the sultan of Kuwait.
For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources calling their output humorous or satirical.
