Context

Clinton made the statement in question, but there's crucial context omitted from some video clips being shared online. Clinton was responding to a hypothetical question about how the United States would respond if Iran launched a nuclear attack on Israel, a U.S. ally.

The claim that former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton once said, "I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran," circulated online in early March 2026.

Social media users shared the claim on platforms such as X (archived), with some calling Clinton a "psychopath" for purportedly making such a statement.

The clip circulated as the United States and Israel initiated a conflict with Iran in late February 2026, inspiring Snopes readers to send emails asking whether Clinton actually made the statement.

The quote is correctly attributed to Clinton, but the context of the remark is crucial. Clinton — then running for president — was responding to a hypothetical question about Iran waging a nuclear attack on a U.S. ally, Israel.

Clinton made the statement in an interview that aired on ABC's "Good Morning America" on April 22, 2008, the day of the Pennsylvania presidential primary in which Clinton vied for the Democratic nomination against future President Barack Obama.

ABC News reported on Clinton's comments in multiple articles at the time. A full clip from the interview, including the critical context, is still available to view online on France 24's YouTube page

The clip showed no signs of digital manipulation and was widely reported on by credible news outlets at the time, including ReutersCNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico

Clinton's full statement from the clip was (emphasis ours):

Well, the question was, if Iran were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel, what would our response be? And I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran. Whatever stage of development they might be in their nuclear-weapons program, in the next 10 years during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them. That's a terrible thing to say, but those people who run Iran need to understand that. Because that perhaps will deter them from doing something that would be reckless, foolish and tragic.

Obama was asked the same question for the "Good Morning America" segment and responded, "I was absolutely clear about the fact that if Iran used nuclear weapons on Israel, or any of our allies, we would respond forcefully and swiftly. … But, in some ways, this hypothetical presupposes a failure to begin with. We shouldn't allow Iran to have nuclear weapons, period."

On April 30, 2008, Reuters reported a response from Iran condemning Clinton's comments, calling it "a provocative, unwarranted and irresponsible statement."

The clip had previously circulated online causing similar commentary from Clinton detractors, including in 2020 when other fact-checking organizations noted it was taken out of context
