On June 5, 2025, during an explosive public online feud with U.S. President Donald Trump, Elon Musk posted (archive) a poll on X asking: "Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?"

The poll was posted and pinned to the top of Musk's verified account @elonmusk. Within two hours, it had received more than 1.3 million votes with 82.3% voting "Yes" to his question.
The post is real and publicly visible.
Musk made the post amid a series of politically charged comments that day — including a separate claim that the reason the Jeffrey Epstein files were not released was that Trump appeared in them, which Snopes addressed in a separate fact check. Epstein, a wealthy financier and convicted sex offender, was in jail awaiting a new, sex-trafficking trial involving underage females when he was found dead by suicide in his cell in 2019.
As of this writing, Musk had not issued a follow-up statement regarding the poll's outcome.
