About this rating

In February 2025, a claim spread online that tech billionaire Elon Musk had called for a boycott of the all-female U.S. panel talk show "The View," describing it as a "meeting place for ignorant women."

The claim spread on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, YouTube, LinkedIn and Bluesky, where one user wrote: "This is rich. Elon touts himself as THE champion for free speech, but apparently only for conservative, fringe voices. He likes to dish it out, but he can't take it, especially if the voices are women's" (archived, archived, archived, archived, archived).

A host of blog websites published articles claiming Musk criticized "The View" on X, the social media platform he owns, and that his comment prompted reactions from the talk show's panelists. However, there is no credible evidence that Musk made any such remark or called for a boycott of "The View." Therefore, we have rated the quote as incorrectly attributed.

For example, one website wrote

The controversy erupted when Musk, known for his unfiltered tweets, responded to a trending segment from The View in which the panel criticized his leadership at X. Taking to his platform, Musk did not hold back:

"Why does anyone watch The View? It's just a meeting place for ignorant women. Time to boycott."

His post quickly went viral, drawing both applause and outrage from social media users.

A search of Musk's X profile, where he regularly posts, using the terms "meeting place ignorant women" produced no evidence of the quote, while a Google News search of the terms "Elon Musk The View meeting place for ignorant women" also revealed no evidence of any reputable news outlet reporting on Musk's alleged call to boycott the show. If Musk had made such a comment, it would have been reported by established newspapers, news websites or networks.

One blog post claimed that the panelists on "The View" responded to Musk's alleged criticism in their "next live broadcast" but did not specify a date. Searches for all of those alleged comments on Google uncovered no evidence of the hosts ever producing the remarks.

Others suggested Whoopi Goldberg, moderator and co-host of the show, addressed the comment on social media, writing: "It's disappoiпtiпg to see someoпe with sυch iпflυeпce resort to demeaпiпg laпgυage. We're here to have meaпiпgfυl coпversatioпs, aпd if that's пot yoυr thiпg, maybe jυst doп't watch." (Note: the Cyrillic "п" and Greek "υ" characters were used in the original copy.) However, Goldberg does not have an X account, her Instagram profile featured no such comment and a search of her Facebook page using the terms "resort to demeaning language" turned up no matching results.

Snopes has previously reported on rumors that have spread about "The View," including a claim that singer Carrie Underwood sued the show for $800 million and the assertion that the Department of Government Efficiency found a $6 million grant awarded to Goldberg to promote diversity on the show.
