In May 2026, a claim circulated online that a new film in "The Godfather" franchise, drawn from the trilogy directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is in development.
For example, one X account wrote (archived), "A new 'Godfather' film is officially in the works. 54 years after the original was released."

The rumor spread elsewhere online, including on pop culture site MovieWeb, which stated:
The new Godfather movie will adapt the forthcoming novel Connie, written by bestselling author Adriana Trigiani in collaboration with the Mario Puzo estate. Paramount Pictures has acquired the screen rights to develop a film adaptation alongside the book's release, which is set for fall 2027. The literary expansion will reimagine and build upon the classic timeline of the original Corleone saga, shifting the focus entirely to Don Vito's only daughter, Connie, famously portrayed by Talia Shire in Francis Ford Coppola's original trilogy.
The "Godfather" series is considered to be one of the most influential in cinema history. It follows a fictional Italian American crime family, the Corleones, and is based on the novels of Mario Puzo, who died in 1999.
There is no evidence that a new "Godfather" film is being developed. However, a new novel following the Corleone family from the original movies and novels is set to be released in 2027. At present, Paramount holds the film rights to all the novels and there is no available information about what stage of development a future film is in, if any, or when it would be released.
Snopes contacted Paramount to learn more and will update this post accordingly. Until then, we rate this claim false.
According to The Associated Press, the new novel was authorized by Mario Puzo's estate and is titled "Connie." It will be told from the perspective of Connie Corleone, the sister of the series' protagonist Michael Corleone and Don Vito Corleone's only daughter. It is the first novel from the whole series to be written by a woman, Adriana Trigiani.
In a statement to The Associated Press, Trigiani reportedly said, "'Connie' is a novel about how a woman works to forge her own way in a world that's already decided who she is, what she's about, and how she should be treated. People underestimated Don Vito Corleone and Michael Corleone at their peril. The same will be true for Connie Corleone." The novel is scheduled for release in fall 2027.
Per The Hollywood Reporter,
There have been multiple novels set in the "Godfather" universe over the years that were written after Puzo's death and approved by his estate. In 2004 and 2006, Mark Winegardner wrote two sequels to the original series, titled "The Godfather Returns" and "The Godfather's Revenge." In 2012, author Ed Falco wrote "The Family Corleone", a prequel to the first novel, "The Godfather." The prequel was reportedly based on an unproduced screenplay written by Puzo.
None of these books were adapted into movies; therefore, there is no guarantee "Connie" will ever be adapted into a film.
