In May 2026, numerous social media users shared a meme claiming MS NOW host Rachel Maddow had expressed contradictory and hypocritical stances on U.S. President Donald Trump's strategy with Iran.

The posts claimed Maddow made widely differing statements in 2025 and 2026, as shown below:

2025: Trump is going to ignore Iran until they have a nuclear warhead pointed at us, and then it's too late.

2026: Trump has no right to strike Iran.

(Facebook user Terrence K Williams)

There is no evidence Maddow made these contradictory statements about Trump's approach to Iran. Her coverage of the Iran strikes in 2025 and 2026 has largely criticized the Trump administration's decisions. Numerous search engine results also found no authentic video or audio confirming the TV host used these words. As such, we rate these remarks as being incorrectly attributed to Maddow.

We reached out to MS NOW for comment on whether the political commentator actually used the above words and will update this story accordingly if we receive a response.

Searching for Maddow's alleged 2025 quote on GoogleDuckDuckGo, and Bing uncovered no authentic videos or articles citing her as the source of the quote. Similarly, inputting the 2026 quote into Google, DuckDuckGo and Bing generated no authentic sources.

Looking at various Maddow show segments from 2025, with a particular focus on her Iran coverage, also uncovered no evidence she made such comments. For example, on June 21, 2025, after Trump ordered attacks on three nuclear sites in Iran, the TV host said (emphasis ours):

[Trump] has threatened military action against Panama, against Canada, against Denmark in order to seize Greenland. He has bombed Yemen over and over and over again, and now he appears to have entered the United States military into a war in Iran, something that neoconservatives have thrilled to for, I guess, two generations now. A lot of commentary around the Trump phenomenon and Trump's politics would suggest that he has risen in opposition to the neoconservatives who have advocated for this type of war since essentially the Iranian Revolution in 1979. But, since 1979, the U.S. military has not engaged directly with Iran. But Donald Trump has done so tonight. […] [The American people] have been largely opposed to and afraid of a potential U.S. war with Iran, again, for generations. Donald Trump has now started it.

In February 2026, Maddow reacted with incredulity to Trump ordering strikes against Iran and addressed viewers with, "Your personal guess is as good as any as to why the president of the United States has just started this war." Maddow then went on to question Trump's motivations for starting the war:

Does Iran have intercontinental ballistic missiles? No, it does not. And there is no known evidence or even serious allegation that Iran is anywhere near developing that technology anytime soon. Even Trump's Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recently admitted that, admitting that the threat is only that maybe "one day" Iran might have that kind of capability? "One day?" Just like you or I might one day learn to fly or to time travel?

Is Iran a week away from industrial-grade uranium enrichment, as the president's diminutive real estate friend, Steve Witkoff, asserted this week when he was asked about the Iran talks he is inexplicably part of on behalf of the United States government and the people of the United States, despite his only relevant experience and training being that he is an old real estate friend of President Donald Trump. Is Iran, as Steve Witkoff says, a week away from achieving industrial-grade uranium enrichment for their nuclear program? No, they are not. No, they are not.

Not only has there been no American or international evidence or intelligence made public that suggests even that they are doing that, but even the Trump administration says explicitly that that is not happening. Marco Rubio on Wednesday at a press conference in St. Kitts and Nevis told reporters, "They are not enriching right now." So why is this happening?

Toward the end of the segment, she asked, "Who benefits?" and said, "Follow the money." In other instances, she said that Trump and his family stood to gain financially from such a war.

In a March 10, 2026 segment, Maddow analyzed how Russia was helping Iran attack U.S. military facilities, as well as the war's effect on a global energy crisis. In April 2026, the political commentator questioned Trump administration officials' competence and decision-making abilities in wartime, criticizing both Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, saying, "our country is simultaneously taking these wild swings directed by Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth with no apparent foresight about what kinds of consequences those swings will bring, while also Trump and Hegseth are fundamentally destabilizing the U.S. military."

In 2018, Maddow criticized the first Trump administration for ending the Iran nuclear deal that former President Barack Obama's administration brokered. Maddow said:

What does it say to you that the United States just today unilaterally broke the last deal that it did with another country to try to stop a nuclear program? Right on the precipice of the North Korea summit, the United States announces, "We're breaking the Iran deal, we're out." That's like telling somebody, "Hey my neighbor just took out a restraining order on me. Would you like to hire me to house sit for you?"

In April 2026, Maddow's show blog also published criticisms of Republican senators who, in 2015, sent a letter to Iran warning against brokering an agreement with the Obama administration. Per the blog, written by Maddow's producer: "As part of an apparent sabotage attempt, the 47 Senate Republicans effectively told Iranian officials not to trust the United States as part of the talks."

Based on an analysis of Maddow's coverage of U.S.-Iran relations over the years, we concluded that she has consistently opposed Trump's actions in Iran, as well as his first administration ending the nuclear deal with the Islamic republic. Furthermore, given that Trump did attack Iran in 2025, the MS NOW host's alleged statement criticizing him for taking no action against Iran is illogical. Maddow's support for the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal indicates that she also opposed military action in Iran.
