A rumor that the U.S. retail chain Target would be adding cocktail bars to some of its locations circulated on social media in November 2024. One person sharing the claim on
A user on X sharing the claim posted, "They are going to make Billions and that's BILLIONS with the big B. Coz housewives are just gonna shop drunk all day. That return policy is going to be changed real fast."
The rumor made its way to Reddit on various different threads, with one user saying, "I don't drink except maybe a couple times a year. Since I started working here in August, I've been really wanting to." Another post on Reddit said, "The monumental task of all of the stores acquiring liquor licenses make it seem nearly impossible." The rumor also spread via TikTok videos.
However, the claim is false and originated from Men's Humor, a network of social media accounts that describes its content as "Humor tailored for men." The post first appeared on X, and was also shared to Facebook and Instagram.

The post read, "Target is opening in-store bars and rolling out their very own margaritas called 'Targaritas'. My wife is never coming home."
There is no evidence that Target plans to add bars to any of its stores or offering its own branded cocktails. No credible news outlets have reported this claim, and Target has not made any such announcement.
Further, the alleged photo of the "Targarita" appears to have been created with a generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) program, with the AI-detection platform Hive Moderation returning a 99.8% likelihood of GenAI.

The apparent copyright logos pictured on the glass are actually just illegible circles, and the coloration around the letters of the logo is inconsistent.
Additionally, the Target logo seen on the glass in the image is not current, as Target moved away from the all-caps logo in 2018 to the current iteration seen below.
