About this rating

On April 5, 2026, social media users claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump posted a profanity-laced message on Truth Social in which he threatened Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz — a key oil route cut off by the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war on Iran — or the country would be "living in hell."

Screenshots of Trump's purported post shared on Easter Sunday read:

Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F**kin' Strait, you crazy b*st*rds, or you'll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP.

The screenshot authentically showed a post from Trump's Truth Social account on April 5, 2026. Therefore, we've rated this claim true.

Trump shared the post (archived here) with text matching the screenshot shortly after 8 a.m. EST on Easter Sunday:

Trump's post suggests the U.S. would attack critical infrastructure in Iran, including power plants and bridges, if Iran did not open the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday, April 7. It is unclear what Trump meant by adding "Praise be to Allah" at the end of his post.

We reached out to the White House for clarification about the meaning behind Trump's post. Anna Kelly, a White House spokesperson responded in an email, "President Trump's TRUTH was very clear – the Iranian regime can make a deal with the United States or suffer grave consequences."

As of this writing, the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz continued to drive global oil prices higher. A Reuters analysis found that Iran, Oman and Saudi Arabia benefited financially from the rising prices, while other states without alternative shipment routes lost billions of dollars.

On April 5, Trump also told an ABC News reporter that "we're blowing up the entire country" of Iran if they do not reach a peace deal in 48 hours. His comments were as follows:

Every day, they're gonna have to build more bridges, and they're gonna have to build more power plants and more everything else. ... There's been no country that's ever taken a pounding like that.

.. If it happens, it happens. And if it doesn't, we're blowing up the whole country. We're blowing up, as I said, it's going to be bridge day and it's going to be power plant day in the country of Iran.
