What's True

Trump posted a lengthy diatribe critical of Chinese and Indian people on his social media site, Truth Social.

What's False

Contrary to what was claimed in some social media posts, the words weren't Trump's own. His Truth Social post consisted of a recording and four-page transcript of on-air remarks by conservative radio talk-show host Michael Savage.

In April 2026, social media users shared a statement supposedly from U.S. President Donald Trump's Truth Social account that said, "I used to be a great supporter of Indians in India until I opened my eyes up to what's going on here."

The quote attributed to Trump circulated on X, Reddit and Threads

Trump did, in fact, post the above quote on his Truth Social account (archived). The remarks were not his own, however. They were made by conservative talk-radio host Michael Savage, also known by his birth name, Michael Alan Weiner. As such, we have rated this claim as a mixture of true and false.

The exact quote is on Page 3 of a longer transcript Trump posted on April 22.

Highlighted passage from an @realDonaldTrump Truth Social post that says,

(U.S. President Donald Trump on Truth Social, illustrated by Snopes)

Savage was arguing against birthright citizenship, or the automatic granting of American citizenship to people born in the United States. Trump, at the start of his second term, signed an executive order trying to limit birthright citizenship, which the courts blocked. As of this writing, his administration is defending the order in front of the Supreme Court in Trump v. Barbara.

The U.S. Constitution says that "all persons" born in the United States are citizens, with some narrow exceptions that don't apply to Trump's executive order. In 1898, the Supreme Court held that children born in the United States with parents ineligible for naturalization are still entitled to citizenship in United States v. Wong Kim Ark

An associated claim that Trump called China and India a "h***hole" also originated from this Truth Social post and the president's repost of Savage's real comments.

Context of quote

In the transcript posted by Trump, Savage railed against non-European immigrants, particularly those from India and China, in an April 1 clip on the commentator's podcast, "Savage Nation."

Savage also insulted the ACLU, one of the primary organizations arguing against Trump's executive order in front of the Supreme Court, and Cecillia Wang, a lead attorney for the plaintiffs in Trump v. Barbara. In his comments about Wang, he referenced racist stereotypes about Chinese people. What he said echoed the history behind the Trump administration's argument in court against birthright citizenship.

The full transcript in Trump's Truth Social post was four pages long. Here are excerpts of what Trump posted from Savage's comments (emphasis and censorship ours):

Today's brief, abbreviated discussion will be about the arguments that I just listened to before the Supreme Court about birthright citizenship. I was somewhat incensed by listening to the arguments because all I heard was legalese being bandied back and forth, and quite noticeable to me was that the person bringing the arguments in favor of flooding America with illegal aliens to change the demographics forever was a Chinese American who looks to me like the classic ACLU attorney. Very smart, very evil and very devious.

[…]

A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other h***hole on the planet. You don't have to go too far to see that. English is not spoken here anymore. That there's almost no loyalty to this country amongst the immigrant class coming in today, which was not always the case.

No, they're not like the European Americans of today and their ancestors.

[…]

Earlier when I saw this going on and listened to the snake from the ACLU Ms. Wang, attorney Wang, she speaks so eloquently. Supreme Court arguments are just legal tricksters. I wrote about fighting each other. Our nation is being overrun with Chinese coming here just to drop a baby on our shores to then bring in the entire family. How about some common sense in a bankrupt nation. ACLU Attorney Wang is pushing to destroy our national identity, turn us into a colony of China, but it's not limited to China, it's also India.

They're also abusing it. I used to be a great supporter of Indians in India until I opened my eyes up to what's going on here. White men need not apply to jobs in the state of California. Nevermind in high tech. I don't care what your qualifications are. You're not getting a job at High Tech in California.

Your chances are nil. You have to be from India or China because almost all the internal mechanisms are set up to run by Indians and Chinese.

Savage says the specific statement about being a "great supporter of Indians in India" at 6:02 in a YouTube video he published from his podcast.
