About this rating

In August 2025, videos circulated online claiming that U.S. President Donald Trump told former U.S. President Barack Obama, "Sit down, boy," during a nationally televised live event.

One YouTube video (archived) spreading the claim, titled "Trump Tells Barack Obama 'Sit Down, Boy' — His Reply Leaves America Speechless," reached more than 325,000 views as of this writing.

The video's description presented the alleged exchange as follows:

During a nationally televised forum in Phoenix, the air changed with one shocking remark: President Trump looked across the stage at Barack Obama and said, "Sit down, boy." The audience gasped, the cameras caught every second, and millions at home couldn't believe what they were hearing.

But it wasn't the insult that people remembered most—it was Obama's reply. Calm, sharp, and unforgettable, his words echoed far beyond the stage. Overnight, the moment spread across classrooms, churches, workplaces, and living rooms, sparking debates about leadership, respect, and the weight of words.

This video takes you through the exchange that gripped a nation, the reaction that shook Washington, and the bigger lesson Americans are still talking about.

A search on YouTube revealed dozens of nearly identical videos with the same narrative, which also spread on X and TikTok.

However, no such exchange ever occurred. A Google search (archived) returned no evidence of Trump telling Obama, "Sit down, boy," at a "forum on race and leadership" in Phoenix or elsewhere in 2025 or any other year. If Trump had made such a remark, mainstream media would have reported the story widely. What's more, the videos spreading the story included disclaimers that the narrative was fictional.

In short, the rumor appeared to be made up from whole cloth for the purpose of gaining clicks or views online. Therefore, we've rated this claim false.

Narrative labeled fictional, contained AI content

The 48-minute video about the claim embedded above opened with this disclaimer:

This story is not intended to depict, reference, or represent any actual occurrences, persons, or entities.
Any resemblance to real events, individuals, or situations is purely coincidental and unintentional.

A similar disclaimer appeared in the video's description:

Disclaimer: The stories presented on this channel are entirely fictional and crafted solely for entertainment. Any resemblance to real events, individuals, or situations is purely coincidental and unintentional. These narratives are not intended to depict, reference, or represent any actual occurrences, persons, or entities.

Without naming a source for the information, the video's narrator said (first minute transcribed):

Millions saw it live. Trump said, "Sit down, boy," but Obama's quiet, razor-sharp reply flipped the entire room and left even his critics stunned. The cameras were already rolling when it happened — the kind of moment that doesn't just fill a room, it freezes it. The bipartisan forum on race and leadership, held inside the Phoenix Convention Center, was meant to be about dialogue. It was meant to bring together two American presidents — one current, one former — together to talk about the future of the nation.

But all of that changed in a single instant. President Donald Trump leaned toward the microphone, narrowed his eyes at Barack Obama, and said the words that would echo far beyond those walls: "Sit down, boy."

Gasps ripped through the audience. You could actually hear people's voices break in shock, like the sound of air leaving a balloon all at once. The silence that followed was almost violent. Thousands of people packed into that hall sat frozen, waiting for what would happen next.

In addition to the disclaimers that the content was fictional, the voice narration appeared to be generated with the use of artificial intelligence. Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector gave a sample of the narrator's voice "Authenticity score: 1 / 100," indicating "the sampled voice is likely a deepfake."

Even with disclaimers and warning signs like the narrator's unnatural, AI-generated voice, comments under the video showed many users still seemed to believe the events were real.

Other fabricated videos pushed similar storylines. One clip, titled, "Barack Obama SHUTS DOWN Trump With One Savage Line on Live TV," described Trump "calling in live" during an Obama town hall in Phoenix.

As with the earlier example, there was no evidence any such broadcast ever happened. The videos appeared to be designed to generate views and ad revenue by capitalizing on interest in purported conflict between the current and former U.S. presidents.

Snopes has fact-checked various rumors involving clashes between Trump and Obama. For instance, in June 2025 we investigated a claim that in 2011 Trump tweeted, "In order to get elected, @BarackObama will start a war with Iran," and in February 2025 we looked at claims that in 2012 Trump tweeted, "Why is Barack Obama constantly issuing executive orders that are major power grabs of authority?"
