In June 2026, a photo circulated online supposedly showing U.S. President Donald Trump with a flipped-up toupee, standing alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron.
For example, one Facebook user posted the picture with the caption, " Trump Walked Around the G7 With His Toupee Flipped Up… and NO ONE Told Him !"
(Facebook page The Resistance Nola)
The photograph spread elsewhere on Facebook and on Reddit, while Snopes readers contacted us to ask whether it was authentic or a digital creation.
In short, the picture did not appear to have been altered through digital editing or manipulation via artificial intelligence software. Instead, a trick of the light made it look like Trump had worn a hairpiece. Other footage and photographs from that day showed he was not wearing a toupee.
A reverse image search on Google Lens and searches on DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo for the phrase "Trump Macron toupee flipped" uncovered no examples of reputable news outlets publishing or reporting that Trump was spotted wearing a hairpiece. If he had been, journalists with such publications would have documented it, or evidence would exist in credible media repositories, such as Getty Images.
Though Trump did visit Versailles Palace with the Macrons on June 17, the photograph did not actually show a flipped toupee on top of the U.S. president's head.
The image appeared to be a still taken from a low-quality YouTube video of Trump climbing stairs at Versailles with France's presidential couple. Some internet users said that clip, posted on June 25, showed a flipped toupee.
Gala, a reputable French publication dedicated to covering celebrities, shared a higher-quality version of that YouTube video (archived). Parts of that video also make it look like Trump was wearing a hairpiece.
Snopes found no earlier examples of the footage online, suggesting it originated from the French outlet. We reached out to Gala to ask if a Gala videographer or someone else filmed it, and will update this story if we learn more.
But reputable news media outlets published other videos and pictures from that day, showing that Trump was not donning a toupee. For example, Getty Images, a reputable image bank, published several photographs of Trump minutes before the moment on the stairs, revealing that his hair was neatly combed.
Therefore, the Gala footage likely featured a trick of the light.
Snopes has debunked similar pieces of media before. For example, in June 2026, we debunked a rumor that a photograph showed Trump sitting on a towel during a Fox News interview.
