On 23 October 2014, late-night comedian Conan O'Brien tweeted a quip that mentioned former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright:

I picked out my Halloween costume. I'm going as "Slutty Madeleine Albright."

— Conan O'Brien (@ConanOBrien) October 23, 2014

The one-liner wasn't unusual in respect to O'Brien's general Twitter fare. But the tweet became news when Albright poked back with a joke of her own:

.@ConanOBrien I'm considering going as hunky Conan O'Brien - but that might be too far fetched.

— Madeleine Albright (@madeleine) October 23, 2014

O'Brien took Albright's gentle ribbing in stride, and replied:

.@Madeleine YES - My first twitter war with a former Secretary of State! You're next, George P. Shultz!

— Conan O'Brien (@ConanOBrien) October 23, 2014

Albright was not finished with O'Brien and added:

.@ConanOBrien Never get into a word war with a diplomat. We talk even more than comedians.

— Madeleine Albright (@madeleine) October 23, 2014

The comic and the diplomat also shared the following exchange:

Damn - Whenever I go toe to toe with @Madeleine Albright, she always wins.

— Conan O'Brien (@ConanOBrien) October 24, 2014

.@ConanOBrien Ha, you're certainly not the first to make that mistake... But all in good fun! #TeamCoco

— Madeleine Albright (@madeleine) October 24, 2014

Under President Bill Clinton, Madeleine Albright was the first female to serve in the position of Secretary of State.
