On 15 December 2014, CBC News reported a small piece of wire had been found inside a Santa's Secrets brand candy cane handed out at the Bryant's Cove Santa Claus parade in Conception Bay North, Newfoundland:
The candy canes were purchased from the Great Canadian Dollar Store in Bay Roberts. Shortly after the store was alerted about the issue, the company posted a message about it to its Facebook page:
There is no reason to believe this occurrence represents a widespread problem, as there have been no other reports of issues with the Santa's Secrets brand of candy canes. The Great Canadian Dollar Store has voluntarily pulled Santa's Secret candy canes from the shelves of all its stores in Newfoundland, although as of 17 December 2014 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency had not issued a recall for the product.
