After former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama's August 2024 speech at the Democratic National Convention addressing income inequality, social media users accused her and her husband, former President Barack Obama — who, as of this writing, share a combined wealth estimated at tens of millions of dollars — of hypocrisy.

Some such posts purported to cite specific examples of the Obamas' unequal lifestyle. For instance, a meme that circulated on both Facebook (archived) and X (archived) stated, "There's nothing funnier than a woman with three mega-mansions, private jets, helicopters and yachts giving you a lecture on income inequality."

The same or similar messages were posted across platforms including Reddit and TikTok

It's true that both during and after his presidency, Barack Obama also talked about income inequality. In a 2013 speech, he discussed "growing inequality and lack of upward mobility" jeopardizing middle-class Americans. In early December 2024, in a speech at the Democracy Forum in Chicago, he said, "We looked at how disruptions in the global economy and resulting rampant inequality are undermining faith in the democratic process, and we discussed how innovative economic reforms might give more people a stake in the system.

While the Obamas indeed own multiple U.S. properties at the time of this writing and regularly use luxury travel services, there is no credible evidence to support the unfounded claims they also own a portfolio of private jets, helicopters and yachts.

The Obama 'Mega-Mansions'

The Obamas are confirmed to own several large homes, none of which can reasonably be described as a "mega-mansion." Although it is up for debate and may also be dependent on location, several sources agree that a so-called mega-mansion is determined by the square footage of the home, with such dwellings frequently measuring upward of 20,000 square feet.

The Obama homes are in Washington, D.C., on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, and in Chicago. Claims of the Obamas owning "mega-mansions" are unfounded, as these are the only confirmed properties tied to the Obamas through public records.

Property ownership records are publicly accessible through government databases. Although property ownership is a matter of public record, some details may be limited to protect privacy.

In 2005, the Obamas purchased a Georgian-style mansion, said to be around 6,300 square feet and in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago, for a reported $1.65 million. We searched the Cook County Recorder of Deeds database as well as the Cook County Assessor's Office website, but could not independently confirm the Obamas' ownership of this home.

Following their departure from the White House in 2017, the Obamas bought an 8,200-square-foot residence in the upscale in the upscale Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The home, which they initially leased in 2016 before making the purchase, remains their primary residence.

Interestingly, some real estate websites say the Obamas' Kalorama home last sold in 2014. However, public records from the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue real property search database indicate the property was purchased on May 31, 2017 (which echoes news reports from that time), for $8.1 million by Homefront Holdings LLC, a trust reportedly associated with the Obamas.

We reached out to Homefront Holdings to confirm ownership of the property and the Obamas' association with the company, and will update this article should we receive a response.

In 2019, the Obamas purchased a 29-acre estate on Martha's Vineyard for $11.75 million. This waterfront property includes a 6,892-square-foot home with seven bedrooms and views of Edgartown Great Pond.

The Dukes County Register of Deeds corroborates the 2019 purchase of the Martha's Vineyard estate, listing the buyers as James F. Reynolds and the 79 Turkeyland Cove Road Nominee Trust. Multiple reports have identified Reynolds as a longtime friend of the Obamas, but none of the documents available through the Dukes County Registry of Deeds mention the Obamas by name.

There is also the mysterious purchase of a beachfront property in Waimanalo, Hawaii, which has reportedly been linked to the Obamas through Martin Nesbitt, a longtime friend and close associate of Barack Obama. Nesbitt, who serves as chairman of the Obama Foundation, reportedly acknowledged his involvement in the acquisition of the property via a limited liability company. The home, which has since undergone extensive renovations, was purchased in 2015 for $8.7 million, with reports suggesting that the estate could serve as a future retreat for the Obama family. Despite the association, neither Barack nor Michelle Obama has publicly confirmed their ownership of or intent to use the property.

We reached out to the Obama Foundation for more information regarding ownership of all these properties, and will update if we receive a response.

Do the Obamas Own Private Jets?

Post-White House, both Michelle and Barack Obama have been known to charter private jets for their travels. However, their frequent chartering of private jets does not equate to ownership of these aircraft, so this claim is unproven.

For example, during a 2023 trip to Australia, Barack Obama reportedly traveled aboard a Bombardier Global 6000 chartered through Solairus Aviation, a private-jet company based in California, but there is no evidence linking the jet to the Obamas as owners. One report suggested Michelle Obama does own a private jet, but did not provide evidence to back up this claim.

Searches of Federal Aviation Administration and Aerobase Group databases for tail numbers visible in photos of private jets associated with the Obamas yielded no confirmation of ownership.

Helicopters and Yachts?

We also found no evidence that the Obamas own helicopters or yachts, making these claims unproven as well.

During his presidency, Obama often traveled on Marine One, the presidential helicopter operated by the U.S. military. Post-presidency, there is no record of the Obamas owning a helicopter for private use. Additionally, their properties, including their Martha's Vineyard home, appear to lack a helipad, making helicopter ownership unlikely.

Similarly, while the Obamas have frequently been photographed vacationing aboard luxury yachts with their famous friends (including Bruce Springsteen and Oprah Winfrey), the ownership of these vessels can usually be traced to those friends and associates. For instance, in 2017, the couple reportedly spent time on the $590 million yacht Rising Sun, owned by music mogul David Geffen.

Social media claims that Michelle and Barack Obama own "three mega-mansions, private jets, helicopters and yachts" are unproven. It's well-documented that the Obamas are linked to three large properties in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Martha's Vineyard. And while they have access to private jets and luxury yachts through charters or friends, there is no credible evidence that they own these assets.

Snopes has previously reported on the Obamas' homes, including the purchase of their waterfront mansion on Martha's Vineyard, and the false claim the former president was evicted from his Washington, D.C., mansion for damaging the building.
