In late February 2026, a theory spread online that convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, a known associate of Jeffrey Epstein, had been replaced in prison by a body double.

Users on social media platforms such as X (archived) and Facebook (archived) spread the rumor along with images highlighting alleged discrepancies between her appearance pre-incarceration and her appearance as of February 2026.

The rumor spread after Maxwell appeared on Feb. 9 for a deposition via video conference before the U.S. House Oversight Committee to answer questions related to Epstein's criminal activities.

Maxwell invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to offer any information, according to a full video of the deposition released on the GOP Oversight YouTube page, as well as comments made at a news conference that followed the deposition and snippets of the questioning that were available to view on YouTube in a BBC News report.

In a post on X (archived), Maxwell's attorney said she would be "prepared to speak fully and honestly if granted clemency by President Trump."

It was not possible for Snopes to independently verify whether the person who appeared during the deposition was a so-called "body double" for Maxwell, so we have left this claim as unrated.

Maxwell's attorney told Snopes via email that the person in the deposition video was indeed Maxwell. He wrote, "Jail is crushing and remember she was in torturous conditions — including sleep deprivation — back in New York. There are a lot of conspiracy theories out there but this one might be in the hall of fame."

We've reached out to the minimum-security Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, where Maxwell has been incarcerated since she was transferred there in August 2025, for comment on this rumor and will update this article if we hear back.

The purported evidence for the theory was centered around alleged discrepancies in Maxwell's appearance. She appeared on camera seated in a chair, wearing a prison uniform with dark hair and glasses.

Users spreading the theory focused primarily on apparent differences in Maxwell's nose, ears and eyes during the deposition as compared with photographs of her before going to prison.

One user on Threads (archived) exhaustively detailed the purported discrepancies in Maxwell's appearance by comparing a single screenshot from the deposition to professional photographs of Maxwell found on image repositories such as Getty Images. It could be perceived as compelling evidence if one ignored the clear disparities between the poor quality of the deposition footage and the high quality of the professional photographs, which made an accurate side-by-side comparison extremely difficult.

The purported evidence also ignored the likelihood that each photo was taken using different lenses, lighting and angles, which can drastically change how a subject appears, let alone any post-production touch-ups that may have been done to the professional photographs.

Finally, there has been extensive research on the health impacts of incarceration due to stress and environmental factors, the physical strain of which could also be the cause of Maxwell's alleged physical changes, as cited by her attorney.

Therefore, any comparison of these images to promote the thesis that one was real and the other was an imposter would need a far more exhaustive and scientific analysis before it could be considered credible. Concluding that a body double is the reason for perceived physical disparities between images of Maxwell before incarceration and after is a reach at best.

For further reading, Snopes recently investigated a rumor alleging Maxwell was actually free and seen walking around Quebec, Canada.
