Throughout June 2026, numerous social media users speculated about the health of Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Several reputable news media outlets reported that the 84-year-old — who is among the oldest sitting senators in government, as of this writing — was admitted to a hospital on June 14. At the time of publication, his condition was unknown, leading to rumors about whether or not he was alive.
People online claimed the senator was either dead or close to death and that his staff were hiding it from the public. One post stated: "Is there a law that requires the Senate to disclose the death of a Senator within a certain number of days? #WhereIsMitch"
It was not possible to independently verify McConnell's health status. On June 30, a member of his team said via email that the Kentucky senator was recovering and still working closely with his staff. Until we know more, we will keep this claim unrated.
In an email regarding McConnell's health, spokesperson Stephanie Penn directed us to a statement from June 24, ahead of the Senate gaveling out of session, that read: "Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week."
Penn did not have any more updates on his health, as of this writing.
The Senate was not in session at the time of publication. It is set to reconvene on July 13.
According to Punchbowl News — a publication that covers the Capitol — McConnell was found unconscious at his home in Washington D.C. on June 14 and emergency services transported him to the hospital. A Capitol Hill reporter published an EMS audio dispatch from that day, which referenced Advanced Life Support (ALS), a set of lifesaving protocols for critically ill patients. It was not possible to independently verify that the audio was related to McConnell's circumstances.
This is not McConnell's first health scare. In March 2023, Snopes reported that the senator had been hospitalized for a concussion after a fall. In that instance, false rumors also spread about his death. He also appeared to freeze on two separate occasions that year. McConnell then suffered injuries from another fall in 2024.
