Since mid-June 2026, rumors have swirled online about the health of Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Several reputable news media outlets reported that the 84-year-old — who is among the oldest sitting U.S. senators — was admitted to a hospital on June 14. As of this writing on July 6, his condition remains unknown, fostering yet more questions about whether or not he is still alive.

People online insinuated the senator must either be dead or close to death, and that his staff was hiding it from the public.

It wasn't possible to independently verify McConnell's health status. On June 30 and July 2, a member of his staff said via email that he was recovering, continued to improve and was still working closely with his team. Until we know more, we will keep this claim unrated.

In an email about McConnell's health, spokesperson Stephanie Penn directed us to a statement from June 24, ahead of the Senate gaveling out of session, that read: "Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week."

On July 2, a spokesperson sent us the following update:

Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he's receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital. The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.

The Senate wasn't in session at the time of publication. It is set to reconvene on July 13.

According to Punchbowl News — a publication that covers the U.S. Capitol — McConnell was found unconscious at his home in Washington, D.C., on June 14 and emergency services transported him to the hospital. Desiree Townsend, a D.C. reporter, published what she described as an EMS audio dispatch from that day that referenced Advanced Life Support (ALS), a set of lifesaving protocols for critically ill patients. It was not possible to independently verify that the audio was related to McConnell's circumstances.

Townsend later cited unnamed sources who claimed the senator was officially "brain dead." On July 6, she said on X that she was waiting at the hospital "for when they eventually decide to cut him off of life support and move his body." Snopes investigated the unproven rumor claiming McConnell was "brain-dead" here.

This is not McConnell's first health scare or his first go-around with death rumors. In March 2023, Snopes reported that the senator had been hospitalized for a concussion after a fall. Social media rumors claimed he was dead. McConnell suffered injuries from another fall in 2024.
