Misinformation runs rampant online, but every so often a rumor that seems too outlandish to believe turns out to be true — sometimes surprising our most-seasoned fact-checkers. 

Looking back on 2025, Snopes fact-checked an array of rumors that initially seemed questionable but, upon closer inspection, were legitimate.  

Some involved U.S. President Donald Trump, including an email from one of his political action committees that asked for donations so he could "get to heaven" and videos that showed him playing tennis against champion Serena Williams. We also verified that U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., bought shares of Palantir Technologies days before the Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced a $30 million contract with the company.

Other claims had nothing to do with the president or politics. For example, we confirmed that researchers found some squirrels in California had started hunting and eating other animals, and tracked down an eerie 911 call from North Carolina that featured a caller shouting, "That's not human."
