In December 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) deployed more than 2,000 federal immigration agents in Minnesota for what it called "the largest DHS operation ever " to supposedly crackdown on illegal immigration.
During the operation in Minneapolis, on Jan. 7, 2026, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot Renee Good, resulting in a surge of misinformation surrounding the circumstances of her death and federal agents' actions in the metro area.
Roughly two weeks later, on Jan. 24, Border Patrol agents in the city surrounded Alex Pretti and fatally shot him , spurring another wave of rumors and public outcry over the federal operation.
Snopes has also fact-checked claims about arrests by federal agents in the area, including rumors about ICE apprehending a special education classroom assistant in her school's parking lot and how a 5-year-old boy was involved in the detainment of his father.
Below, we break down 24 claims related to the federal operation in Minnesota in December 2025 and January 2026.
