Mamdani has been the target of several questionable rumors since the start of his mayoral campaign. We've got the facts.

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City's mayor on Jan. 1, 2026.

A self-described democratic socialist, Mamdani campaigned for a tax on the wealthiest New Yorkers to pay for rent freezes, an end to bus fares, free child care and more. He is the city's first Muslim mayor.

Since the start of his mayoral campaign, several unfounded and misleading claims involving him have spread. Snopes has worked to get to the bottom of them.
