In July 2026, as rumors swirled about the health of Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell amid a weekslong hospitalization, a claim (archived) circulated online that McConnell's reported health issues left him brain-dead.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, brain death happens when a medical condition like traumatic injury or stroke causes permanent damage to the brain. A person diagnosed as brain-dead is legally dead.

The claim stems from far-right influencer Laura Loomer. On July 6, 2026, 23 days after McConnell was reportedly hospitalized on June 14, Loomer wrote, "NEW: High level source close to the White House tells me 'Mitch McConnell is officially brain dead. He's not coming back.'"

Loomer's claim also circulated on Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived), Threads (archived), Bluesky (archived) and Reddit (archived). Snopes readers contacted us about the rumor.

At the time of this writing, we could not independently verify McConnell's general health status or confirm whether he was brain-dead. In emailed statements on June 30, July 2 and July 7, a member of his staff told Snopes that he was recovering, continued to improve and was still working closely with his team. The spokesperson did not reply to a question on July 7 about whether doctors had diagnosed McConnell as brain-dead.

We've left this claim unrated until we learn more.

On July 7, McConnell's office claimed the senator had spoken to conservative political commentator Scott Jennings (archived), Senate Majority Leader John Thune (archived), and Senate Whip John Barrasso (archived) since the previous day. While this suggested McConnell was responsive, audio recordings of phone calls or other primary evidence substantiating the claims remained unavailable as of this writing.

McConnell's office sent an email with the above links to Jennings' post about speaking with McConnell, as well as reported statements from spokespersons for Thune and Barrasso, implying verification that the three conversations took place. Snopes contacted the offices of Thune and Barrasso to independently confirm they spoke to McConnell on July 6 and 7, respectively, and await replies to our questions.

In his July 7 X post, Jennings wrote that he spoke with McConnell "for just shy of 20 minutes" about topics including Iran, Ukraine and "the unfolding situation in Maine," among others.

I spoke to my old friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior Senator from Kentucky. He's still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just shy of 20 minutes … about IRAN, UKRAINE, the unfolding situation in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even a…

Regarding McConnell's health, his spokesperson said:

Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he's receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital. The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.

The Senate was not in session at the time of publication. It is set to reconvene on July 13.

Unproven claim that McConnell is 'brain-dead' spreads online

In a reply to her July 6 post (archived), Loomer claimed that a White House source told her McConnell "is in organ failure" and that doctors had declared him "brain-dead." She further alleged that "the White House has been told 'McConnell isn't ever coming back.'"

As of this writing, Snopes was unable to independently verify Loomer's claims. We contacted Loomer to ask about her anonymous source and the White House to ask if someone really told them McConnell was not coming back and await replies to our questions.

McConnell was reportedly found unconscious at his home in Washington, D.C., on June 14 and emergency services transported him to the hospital, according to the politics publication Punchbowl News and other politics outlets.

Desiree Townsend, a D.C. reporter, published what she described as an EMS audio dispatch from that day that referenced Advanced Life Support (ALS), a set of lifesaving protocols for critically ill patients. It was not possible to independently verify that the audio was related to McConnell, though credible news outlets — including the New York Times, CNN and The Hill — reported that the call in question was to the senator's address. Snopes asked McConnell's office whether the call involved the senator and will update this story if we receive a response.

On July 6, Townsend shared Loomer's post about McConnell allegedly being brain-dead and wrote (archived), "I have heard the same thing from my sources for days. At this point, I am at the hospital for when they eventually decide to move cut him off of life support and move his body. "

Snopes could not independently verify Townsend's claim that McConnell was on life support. We contacted Townsend to ask about her sources and to request information substantiating her claims. We will update this story if we receive a reply.

Snopes has previously reported on death or injury rumors surrounding McConnell, who was 84 years old at the time of this writing. In March 2023, Snopes reported that the senator had been hospitalized for a concussion after a fall. Social media rumors claimed he was dead. McConnell suffered injuries from another fall in 2024.
