In 2025, information — and, crucially, misinformation — flies fast and loose across the internet. From fictional stories masquerading as "fact" to claims that begin with a kernel of truth only to become distorted as they spread, misleading rumors run rampant online like a game of telephone.

A wide range of claims submitted by Snopes readers as of late come down to one determining factor: was generative artificial intelligence (AI) used to create them?

Easily accessible tools like ChatGPT or Midjourney, widely accused of stealing copyrighted works and having a negative impact on the environment, allow users to create anything they can imagine using simple prompts. As a result, more AI-generated claims than ever before are circulating on social media despite having no basis in reality.

From serious claims about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents supposedly abducting a child in school and public figures socializing with convicted sex trafficking criminals to lighthearted fare involving exotic wild animals, AI-created media requires an extra layer of caution with everything we encounter online.

Here's a collection of 25 claims that definitely or likely involved AI-generative software.
